Egypt contributes only 0.6% of global emissions and makes progress on the climate change index

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) issued a press release today, Tuesday, on the occasion of World Environment Day, which is celebrated annually on June 5. It is the largest international event dedicated to monitoring positive environmental changes, with broad participation from countries around the world.

This year’s official celebration will be held in the Republic of South Korea, the host country for World Environment Day 2025, under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution,” as part of the global call to reduce the use of plastics, which negatively impact the environment and public health.

The statement highlighted a number of important environmental indicators, most notably:

The percentage increase in greenhouse gas emissions in Egypt reached 12% in 2022 compared to 2019, according to Egypt’s first transparency report (EG-BTR1) issued by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in early 2025.
However, Egypt’s contribution to these emissions did not exceed 0.6% of total global emissions, reflecting its limited impact on global warming.

The statement also noted Egypt’s progress in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) for 2025, ranking 20th out of 67 countries included in the index, compared to 22nd place in the previous year, 2024.
Egypt thus outperformed several countries, including South Africa, which ranked 38th, Algeria, which ranked 51st, and the United Arab Emirates, which ranked 65th. This reflects a relative improvement in Egypt’s performance in addressing climate change and adhering to environmental standards.

It is worth noting that World Environment Day is a global awareness and mobilization platform aimed at strengthening governmental and community efforts to preserve the environment, reduce harmful practices, and promote policies that support sustainable development.
